The salary table below plus the 10 questions to ask before you accept a GSM offer.

Sample question, scored

"Tell me about a cost-down you led on a part already in production." Here is a 5/10 answer and a 9/10 answer to the same question.

Scores 5 / 10

"We had a bracket that was too expensive so I went back to the supplier and negotiated. I benchmarked a couple of other quotes and used that to push them. We ended up saving about 8% which was a big win for the program."

No baseline, no absolute dollars, no lever beyond "benchmarked." The interviewer cannot tell what you did versus what the market did.
Scores 9 / 10

"A cast aluminum bracket at $14.20, 180K units a year, single-sourced. I built a should-cost from cycle time and alloy index and landed at $11.60. Took that to the supplier with a dual-source RFQ in parallel. Settled at $12.10 with a 12-month index clause, $380K annualized, and kept the incumbent because the alternate's PPAP timing didn't fit SOP."

Baseline, lever, number, and the trade-off you accepted. That four-beat structure is what every strong cost-down answer shares; the guide teaches it.

Frequently asked

Short answers to what candidates ask most.

Who is this for?

Buyers, Senior Buyers, Global Supply Managers, Commodity Managers, and Sourcing Managers interviewing at EV, aerospace, defense, and robotics companies, plus people moving into procurement from engineering or operations.

Who writes the content?

A lead sourcing manager with 15 years across heavy truck, EV, and hard-tech startups who has run hiring loops for these roles. The brand is deliberately faceless so the content, not a personality, carries the credibility.

Is the guide really free?

Yes. You get the PDF by email and a short weekly issue after that. Starter ($9.99/month) adds the full question bank and premium issues; Pro and Loop Ready arrive in 2027 and list members get them first at founder pricing.

What do I get with Starter, and how is it delivered?

A members-only weekly issue with a new question scored two ways, access to the full question bank as it grows toward 220, per-employer pay data, and negotiation scripts. Delivered by email and a members page the day you subscribe. Cancel anytime; money back within 14 days.

Is Procurestart affiliated with any employer?

No. Procurestart is an independent brand of Procurest and does not use or reference any employer's confidential information. Salary data comes from publicly posted ranges only.

How does the scoring rubric work?

Five criteria, ten points each: structure, quantified impact, commercial judgment, supplier depth, and hard-tech fit. A 7 is a solid hire-level answer; 9 to 10 is exceptional. The guide shows the rubric applied to every model answer.
